Hybrid System / Grid-tied system with battery back-up

The next type of system is a GRID-TIED system with battery backup, otherwise known as a HYBRID system. This configuration is ideal for customers who are already connected to the grid but want the added security of battery backup. Good candidates for this type of system include those who experience frequent power outages in their area or who simply wish to be prepared for emergencies. With a HYBRID system, you benefit from the best of both worlds: you remain connected to the grid while having backup power, all while lowering your utility bills.

In the event of a power outage, battery-based GRID-TIED systems provide electricity and allow you to store energy for emergency use. You can back up essential loads, such as lighting and appliances, when the grid is down. Additionally, you can utilize energy during peak demand times by storing it in your battery bank for later use. However, the drawbacks of this system include higher costs compared to basic GRID-TIED systems and lower overall efficiency, as well as the increased complexity due to additional components. The integration of batteries requires a charge controller to protect them, and a sub-panel must be installed to isolate the important loads you wish to back up. Not all loads in the house will be backed up by the system; only essential loads that are needed during a power outage are managed through this backup sub-panel.
